May 25 1944, Atlantic Ocean. A Grumman TBF-1 Avenger (BuNo 24295) , flown by Lt. William F. Chamberlin of Composite Squadron VC-9 and his crew , strike the ramp of the U.S.Navy' escort carrier U.S.S. Solomons (CVE-67) during landing. The Avenger split in two after hitting the flight deck ramp, sending pieces of wood from the deck everywhere. Chamberlain managed to stay on the deck while his other two crewmen in the tail section bounced off the 5-inch gun on the fantail and into the water. These two were picked by a destroyer escort and recovered from their injuries. Although they survived this accident, all three were killed on June 15 1944 during an attack against the German U-boat U-860.
