1944, Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire, England. Men hoisting a 12,000-Ib MC deep-penetration bomb, codenamed "Tallboy" to be loaded into an Avro Lancaster from the R.A.F. No. 617 Squadron. The bomb in the picture was used during a raid on a concrete fortified V-weapon site, that built and launched V-2 rockets, at Wizernes, France, June 24 1944. The 617 Squadron dropped several Tallboys which damaged the foundations of the bunker but did not directly hit it. However, the Germans abandoned the site two days later. Today the V-weapon site at Wizernes is a museum.
