March 4 1945, Iwo Jima. The B-29 Superfortress "Dinah Might" was the first B-29 to land on Iwo Jima. It was severely damaged after a raid over Japan and wouldn't be able to land at Tinian, Guam or Saipan as most B-29s were based at. Dinah Might landed at Iwo's Airfield No.1 on March 4 1945 and dozens of U.S. Marines and Seabees rushed to celebrate the first bomber that was saved thanks to capturing Iwo Jima. By March 26, the day Iwo Jima was declared secured, 36 damaged B-29s were able to land safely on Iwo Jima, each B-29 had a crew of 11.
